Movie Review (Synopsis):
Based on a true story, The Possession is the terrifying account of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil. Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Kyra Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

It turns out the box contains a “Dybbuk” – which, according to Yiddish folklore, is a wandering spirit who takes over the bodies of living people, rather than moving onto the next realm of existence. Hannah’s parents are forced to find a way to exorcise the sinister entity from their daughter, before it consumes her whole .

The Possession appears to be a pretty conventional story about a malicious spirit taking control of an innocent girl – as scripted by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White, the co-writers of the similar, PG-13 supernatural horror flick, Boogeyman. Possession likewise comes complete with the sort of macabre CGI imagery that has a “budget look” – and predictable scares that bring to mind those featured in such titles as The Unborn.there is one visual included here that leaves a strong impression; no surprise, it’s the same one featured in the official promotional poster for The Possession.

You can generally count on both Dean and Sedgwick to turn in good performances, which could help elevate The Possession a bit above its genre trappings. Similarly, the film’s director (Ole Bornedal) has picked up a handful of festival awards for his previous work on movies like Just Another Love Story and Deliver Us from Evil – hopefully, he will also deliver a competent (if generic) horror/thriller here.

"A Jinx in a Box," this horror film from Ghost House Pictures and director Ole Bornedal (Nightwatch) tells the tale of a broken family that comes under attack from a malevolent supernatural entity of Jewish folklore. Shortly after her parents (Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick) divorce, a young girl purchases an ornate antique box at a yard sale. In the weeks that follow, the young girl forms an intense fixation on the box, her behavior growing increasingly bizarre as she falls into the grip of a diabolical apparition. When the girl's father discovers that the relic is in fact a holding cell for the disconnected soul of a deceased person who has been denied entry into the afterlife and needs a human host to inhabit, he fights to rid her of the evil that threatens to consume her body and soul.

short film centered around something or someone being possessed by Satan! And I was making those films long before M. Night even thought about Devil, so don’t even start. Anyhow, if Satanic possession is my favorite thing, my second favorite thing is possession by a Dybbuk. The Dybbuk is an evil spirit from Jewish mythology, said to be the malicious misplaced soul of a deceased person. They like to pop up and make trouble in the body of someone living. And there’s another Dybbuk movie coming out.

The Possession, formerly titled Dybbuk Box, or maybe it was Dibbuk Box, is based on the supposedly true story of a young girl purchasing a strange box at a yard sale that has a Dybbuk in it that possesses her over time. And that’s awesome. I don’t know how much truth there is to that story, but there’s been articles and a book published about it, and here’s the real Dybbuk box’s website, where you can read its story. The film is directed by Danish genre filmmaker Ole Bornedal and stars Natasha Calis as the young girl, Jeffery Dean Morgan as her father, and Kyra Sedgwick as the girl’s mother. Sam Raimi is producing.

Being excited about something coming out of Sam Raimi’s production company Ghost House Pictures is an iffy prospect, but I’m going to risk it for this one, considering the subject matter and the fact that said subject matter even caused me to enjoy David S. Goyer’s The Unborn. Do you know anyone who liked that movie? Do you even remember it? No? That’s right. I own it on DVD and I’m alone. Forever.

Desperate to fill time with his daughters, Morgan decides to take them to a local yard sale. Again, there's no reason to doubt The Possession is based on a true story, even if the girls do both seem a little bit too excited by the prospect of rooting through boxes of wires and old Now That's What I Call Music cassettes.

However, one of the girls finds herself inexplicably drawn to a box covered in mysterious Hebrew inscriptions. Now, this is where things become less believable. Look at all the stuff on sale – there's an old telly, a birdcage, some spoons. Why on Earth would she ignore goodies like that in favour of a rubbishy-looking box? I'm beginning to suspect The Possession isn't really based on a true story at all.

Concerned by this unusual – although perfectly rational – turn of events, the girl's parents take her for a scan. There, they discover a terrifying foreign object nestled inside her. But there's no cause for alarm. If you squint a bit, the object looks a bit like a set of maracas. Perhaps the true story of The Possession is the story of a little girl who ate some maracas. Makes perfect sense.

Buyers bid on the box very quickly, even knowing about the "bad luck". It sold for $280 to a museum curator named Jason Haxton. After he bought the box, The Forward, a 107-year-old Jewish newspaper, published an article about the mysteries behind the box.

Many rabbis and other high-level Jewish scholars have offered to open the box and one even asked Haxton to take all images of the box off the Internet because it would serve as a way for spirits to invade homes. The spirit people are worried about is the "Dybbuk", which is supposed to be a malevolent spirit of a dead person.
