Spring Landscape Care

Spring has arrived in Birmingham and the trees, plants, and grass are about to have an explosion of growth. The temperature and humidity in the Magic City are a perfect storm for many of the species and varieties of shrubs and plants that inhabit the Birmingham landscape. Mowing the yard and basic edging and weed eating is part of your regular lawn maintenance during spring, summer, and part of fall in Birmingham, AL. Landscaping and hardscaping installations will require much more than basic lawn care. If you are getting your landscape ready for the coming season, there are several things you can do to get a jump start on maintaining a healthy landscape the whole year long.

Pruning your trees and shrubs this early will help them grow new and healthy. Removing older, dead branches will create room for new growth. Cutting limbs or tree trimming earlier is going to cost less with fewer limbs and branches to remove.

Fertilize your lawn, trees, and shrubs. Your soil needs to be tested every few years and you need to follow the instructions for your type of soil when fertilizing. Through proper testing, you will know the nutrient requirements, time of year that is best, and any special requirements for your fertilizer. Trees and shrubs also benefit from fertilization so make sure to check your species requirements for fertilizer before applying.

All sprinklers and irrigation systems need to be checked to make sure they are in working order. Weed control can be applied early or in spring to help curb that pesky crabgrass and weeds that infiltrate early. Make sure to remove debris from plant beds and planting areas. Now is also a good time to remove old mulch and replace with new. Mulch will make your landscape look newer and adds nutrients to the soil (when using organic).

Having a professional landscaping service such as Birmingham Landscape Designer takes care of your maintenance and lawn care will take that stress off of you!
