Like every kind of jewel, pearl is one of the jewels, which are admired by everyone. It is a jewel that might look simplest, but has the ability to give you a royal look. Those who believe in real luxury will love to wear a necklace which is completely made of pearl. The possibilities of usage of pearl are endless; how you wear it depends on you. However, if you want to get one for yourself, then you must know what all kinds of pearls are available. For that, you must first know about the two basic categories of pearls which are natural and cultured pearls respectively:

When an intruder gets into the shell of an oyster, it releases a substance to protect itself from that intruder. That substance, when collected over time, forms the pearls. Now, if the intruder automatically gets into the shell, it is natural cultivation, and when they are purposely put into the shell, it is said to be cultured. The natural cultivation results in a better quality pearl.

When it comes to types of pearls, then the most popular type that you will find is the Akoya pearls. Akoya is the name taken from the Japanese oyster. In shape, they are perfectly rounded. They are harvested after every 9-16 months. Another category of pearls is the freshwater pearls. As their name suggests, they are cultivated from the freshwater mussels, who do not live in salt water. They are easier to cultivate as compared to salt water oysters. In recent times, it is difficult to find the original fresh water pearls as they are very rare. If you are in a search of some real large pearls, then you must look out for south sea pearls. They are cultivated throughout the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. They are widely harvested commercially and are commonly used in the designer jewelries of these days. Their size can go up to 20mm. The size of an oyster is also large. The environment in which pearls are harvested is also a determining factor in their size. They are very clean and are filled with plankton. Their harvesting time is also very large and is nearly two years!

Those people who are true admirers of jewels are highly suggested doing a lot of research for a good online store before buying any pearl jewelry. It is always good to do at least a little bit of research because you should know what you are wearing and flaunting, the knowledge with the jewelry is always a good thing to do! A simple search on any search engine would provide you with countless web search results regarding pearls, and you can easily place an order on their website.
