Discussing Our Retro Gaming White Whales

Posted by aisiy on January 15th, 2013

This slightly uninteresting video comes from Marvelous: Another Treasure island, a ArcheAge Security Account 1996 Super Nintendo adventure game which marked the directorial debut of current Legend of Zelda chief Eiji Aonuma. And there's a reason that the above visual aid may strike you as lackluster: simply put, there's not a lot of info to be found on this extremely late (we're talking post-N64) Super Famicom release -- I couldn't even dig up a box scan large enough to fill a blog header! Other Nintendo-related series like Mother receive an insane amount of attention and devotion -- and rightfully so -- but somehow, Marvelous consistently manages to miss the radar of people who suffer from bursts of excessive outrage whenever a seemingly good game stays in its country of origin.

So, is Marvelous actually worth playing? It's very likely; Aonuma has more than proven his skills at this point, and I'm sure his talent remains intact even when his projects have nothing to do with a certain green-capped elf boy. But I'm not likely to find out soon, since Marvelous hasn't received any fan-translation support thrown its way in recent history. Given this game's status as a late-in-the-game Super Famicom title, I'm sure anyone who tries their hand at taking apart Marvelous' insides will find a generous supply of compression and copy protection to deal with -- a dangerous duo that's stifled fan translations in the past. We can only hope that these kind benefactors once again find a way to help the linguistically challenged take on a game that had the audacity to come out in another language.

That said, it's time to share. Has there been a Retro Gaming white whale that's constantly escaped your grasp? It can be a language barrier between you and your dreams, or something much simpler, like rarity or cost that prevents these games from finding their way into your filthy clutches. Whatever the case, it's time to both share and commiserate about our first-world problems. source: 1up
