Blocked and Clogged-up Sinks and Drains

With a little bit of practice and a couple of inexpensive tools, anyone can unblock a simple drain clog in a few minutes. However, if the drain clog refuses to clear, it would be wise to call a specialist to deal with the problem.

Before you start working, it would be useful to get your plunger and a hand auger, also known as a snake. A plunger with a relatively larger rubber bell will deliver a more powerful thrust and also ensure that it has a strong handle so that you can apply a lot of force.

The snake on the other hand is quite inexpensive, with the price varying according to the desired turning mechanism, length and size. For an all-purpose hand auger, it is recommended that you purchase the 3/8 inch model with a length of about 20feet since it will be easier to navigate into the clogged up drain. It would be good to also have a pair of rubber gloves, flashlight and a bucket to place under the drain.

If the procedure does not help to unclog your sink, call in a plumber as the blockage may be way beyond your access or there could be an object that got stuck in your pipes. Before plunging, be careful to clamp the flexible parts tightly. This is to prevent the backflow of dirty water into the sink.

Plunge vigorously in an up and down motion for about 30 seconds keeping the towel close, to wipe off any spills. If you had poured drain cleaner chemicals down the drain, it is advisable that you do not snake or plunge the sink, since it can be very harmful to your skin if the chemicals happen to get on your skin.

After the drain is unclogged pour in a mixture of ½ cup of vinegar and ½ cup of baking soda down the drain, letting it sit for a couple of minutes and pour about a gallon of warm water to flush out the concoction. This helps to not only dissolve any fat deposits that may have been left behind, but also leaves the drain smelling clean and fresh.
