If your vehicle fails the emission test, do not show any sign of an offence because it is a positive sign rather than a negative one. Maybe you haven’t noticed your vehicles performance is wasting valuable fuel. Emission test failure is an indication of your wasting dollars on fuel, and it will give you an opportunity to fix the problem. Once, you do it you will save lots of money on fuel in the long run.

Failing the emission test is certainly not a pleasant experience. When it happens, naturally you will get it repaired what fault actually caused the test failure, then your vehicle will be running more efficiently wasting less fuel than before, which is a saving for you. It is the smog test that decides the emission levels. The smog testing technician will give you a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR). It is in this VIR that which of the harmful emissions, namely HC, Co, NOx caused your vehicle to fail the emission test, is revealed. The emission test repair technician can fix the problem of the vehicle basing on the VIR results. “ASM emission test results’ noted at the bottom of the VIR indicates the emission results, as follows;

Max – maximum emissions allowed for the pollutants basing on the engine size, weight and year of manufacture of the vehicle.

AVE – average emissions allowed for the same features.

MEAS – your vehicles measured readings at time of inspection. If it amounts above the cut-off of allowed emissions limits – this indicates the area of emission failure.

Although, CO2 and O2 are measured in the test, they do not constitute the test indicators. As per California Smog Check Program, a joint effort between the California Air Resource Board, the California Bureau of Automotive Repair and the California Department of Motor Vehicles, all vehicles more than 6 years old or manufactured in 1976 and newer need to take up smog check biennially i.e. every two years. Similarly, diesel vehicles of 1998 model or newer need to take the smog test.

Auto repair shops out there in Sacramento conduct smog failure diagnostics, which include fuel injection cleaning, fuel mixture adjustment, tune-up’s, timing adjustment and emission check coming from the tailpipe. If you carry out regular check on these parameters, your vehicle will be free from smog failures to give you smooth and excellent engine condition. This will give you a lot of saving dollars on gas. You can find them online, fix up an appointment and take your vehicle for a smog test.
