What Classes Of Travel Does Air India Offer?

Posted by jacksonjames on February 27th, 2023

For decades now, Air India has stuck to its traditional three-class configuration of Economy, Business and First Class on its wide bodies with only the first two being on its narrow bodies. However, the winds of change are blowing for the national carrier, so here's a look at the cabins available on Air India.

Before we dive in, it is important to note that the recent privatization of Air India means that its cabin offerings will change in the near future. The carrier has committed to spending 0 million to refurbish the cabins of 27 of its 787 Dreamliners and 13 777s, so expect to see a refresh over the next 18 months. Meanwhile, passengers will also enjoy some exciting new offerings thanks to the addition of 11 leased 777s to the fleet this year.

First grade

Starting with the front of the plane, we have First Class on Air India, which is only found on Boeing 777s (all but two). Most aircraft have only one row of first row seats in the right front part of the aircraft, which makes for a more intimate flying experience and ensures personalized service. With four seats in a 1-2-1 layout, it's not the most luxurious cabin in the sky, but it's a step up from Business Class, as we'll soon see.

Three of Air India's new 777s have eight seats in first class, spread across two rows, which contrasts with the single-row exclusivity maintained by other airlines. With the cabin now over 15 years old, it's starting to show its age, especially with the IFE and interiors.

Unlike other airlines, Air India will maintain first class by revamping its cabin next year. It is yet to be revealed how many aircraft will receive the new first class, with business class becoming the most popular cabin. However, expect to see an industry-standard product at least very soon.

Business Class (Legacy)

Business Class is a popular offering from Air India with a fleet of 43 widebody cabins. On 27787-8s, the cabin is laid out in a 2-2-2 layout (18 seats total), while 777s offer the legacy 2-3-2 (35 seats total) configuration with a reclining middle seat. And while those numbers don't exactly make the cabin exciting, they do have some advantages.

On the Dreamliner, ottomans in front of each seat give you enough room to stretch out and sleep without the restrictive cabins found in most modern airliners. However, the same can't be said of the 777, which has been regularly criticized because its obsolete flat-angle workbench has long been the industry norm.
